We explain how various specialists’\ncollaboration enabled the patient’s prompt recovery. A speech-language-hearing therapist first confirmed\nthat the patient did not have any physical dysfunction. A psychologist then implemented an explicit action\ngoal of “restoring eating behaviors” while addressing the patient’s fear that food might be caught in his\nthroat. The psychologist established an agenda which the child could easily follow, and utilized a reward\nsystem to sustain the patient’s motivation for recovery. Additionally, the specialists were careful to avoid\nfriction that could occur among family members from the patient’s behavioral problems and the efforts to\nsolve them.
